There are several types of refractory each with its own unique properties.
Thus, choose the right refractory installation by knowing the type of application.
What is Refractory?
In general, refractory is the process of using refractory equipment for heat-resisting containers. Also, it supports combustion processes or molten solids undergoing heat treatment.
Basically, thermal insulation and conduction are the two main features of refractory products. Hence, refractory materials control and conduct heat through the walls to the charge.
Types of Refractory
Commonly, the refractory industry uses refractory supplies. Such as high alumina cement, fire clay bricks, refractory tiles, and insulation bricks. Furthermore, there are many types of refractory materials for a variety of applications.
Hence, the right type of refractory can control the changing conditions of furnaces, boilers, chimneys, and kilns. Here we will list the different types of refractories available in Malaysia.
Refractory Types & Its Application in Malaysia
1. Brick Refractory
Generally, refractory brick contains ceramic, aluminum oxides, and silica. This helps provide excellent heat resistance. Also, there are even some types of refractory bricks that can withstand over 2,100°C.
Apart from that, fire clay bricks are anti-flammable and insulate very well. This firebrick reduces energy loss significantly and avoids the possibility of a fire.
Brick refractory applications:
Refractory lining and insulation bricks. Such as for chimneys, kilns, furnaces, ovens, and other high-temperature structures.
2. Plastic Refractory
Basically, plastic refractories use refractory materials with high plasticity for longer durability. It is a paste-like material made of a binder, plasticizer, and water.
Plastic refractory application:
Incinerators, soaking furnace, boilers, steel oven, furnace burner, etc.
3. Ramming Refractory
Basically, a strong ramming process forms refractory ramming mass into a bulk structure. This includes a blend of refractory aggregate, a binder, and an additive.
In addition, it comprises fire clay, a high alumina base, corundum, silica, carborundum, or magnesia. So, the ramming mass is notably resistant to chemicals, erosion, abrasion, and shock.
Ramming refractory application:
Electric furnace, tapping trough, open-hearth furnace, induction furnace, etc.
4. Patching Refractory
Typically, it can repair the refractory lining of industrial furnaces. Moreover, patching refractory is easy to manage and increases a structure’s service life.
However, the refractory patching materials depend on the applications. For example, refractory grouting material, refractory pressing material, refractory spraying coating, and refractory pouring material.
Patching refractory application:
Blast furnace, converter, iron trough, reheating furnace, electric furnace, etc.
5. Coating Refractory
Also called foundry coating, refractory coatings can resist the high heat of the molten metal. This protective coating is the barrier between a hot molten metal and the core surface.
Hence, once the paint is applied, it evaporates leaving a refractory layer on the sand surface. Then, the layer will act as a wall to reduce molten metal penetration. Which will prevent sand erosion thus improving the refractory casting surface.
Coating refractory application:
Coating steel, non-ferrous foundries, metallurgy, spun pipes, tools, and refractories.
Know the Types of Refractory
Various types of refractory can help you decide for an ideal refractory project
Generally, refractories come in all shapes and sizes. Plus, it has a profound resistance against heat-related harm. Besides this, the type of refractory is also wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant.
Therefore, consider the many factors before choosing the right type of refractory. So, choose the best refractory contractor to help you with a durable refractory project.
